For years, catcher was a position of strength for the Atlanta Braves. From the middle of 2005 to the end of 2013, Brian McCann provided elite offense for a backstop and served as one of the franchise’s cornerstones. Prior to that, they enjoyed a decade with Javy Lopez as the primary catcher and Eddie Perez as the backup.
Now, though, the position has been in flux for three seasons following McCann’s departure. Evan Gattis took over and played well, though, given his defensive limitations, he never seemed like a long-term solution. Next, Christian Bethancourt was given a shot but his bat never developed as the team had hoped. Neither is still with the organization. Since then, they’ve gone with an assortment of spare parts and filler.
This year, three players saw time behind the plate for Atlanta – A.J. Pierzynski, Tyler Flowers, and Anthony Recker.
Today, we’re going to take a look at that trio in order of who received the most playing time.
